Using the State Library for Research

Start Here

Step 1. Get a library card

SIGN UP FOR A LIBRARY CARD

 With a free Library card you can:

  • use most of the Library’s collections
  • access e-resources in the Library
  • use most of the e-resources/ebooks
  • request books from other libraries
  • print and photocopy
  • use Library computers
  • use Library wifi
  • book a study room.

Your card can be posted to you.

If you are short on time and already have a NSW public library card you can register your card for instant access to the Library's e-resources.

Step 2. Where to next?

      

Step 3. Finding online resources

1. Login using your library card
2. Start with a catalogue search.
3. Enter your best search term/s & search.
4. When the results come back, use the filters in Refine my results on the right to narrow results.
The most useful filters are :
  • Full text available (which means you should have immediate access)
  • Date (start with a range no bigger than 10 years)
1. Login using your library card
2. Go to ERESOURCES and choose HSC
3. Choose your subject and a list of the dozen or so of the most relevant databases will open.

4. Pick and search in each of these databases in turn.  
(Hint EBSCO, Gale and Proquest databases are very similar so searching one would do.  Informit​ is probably a good one to start with).
