The 19th and early 20th centuries were periods of massive and global social, political, economic, and cultural changes and developments. From the global wars, such as the Seven Years War, that shaped Europe and North America alike, to the revolutionary movements throughout the European continent that disrupted the traditional political structures, to the widespread industrialization and economic developments, and to the growth of the educated middle class.
The world was changing and part of this change was the development of new ways of thinking and interacting within the social environment and the global community.
This was the age of isms: Imperialism, socialism, romanticism, nationalism, militarism, social Darwinism .
Imperialism
Imperialism is a policy of extending a country's power and influence through colonization, the use of military force, and other means. We might further define imperialism as "the policy of extending a nation's authority by territorial acquisition or by establishing economic and political hegemony over other nations."
The legacies of 18th and 19th centuries Western imperialism still impact our world today.
