GEO 10 - Human Rights - Semester 1 - Syria: The Arab Uprising

Background to the uprising

The Arab Spring refers to the uprising of pro-democracy movements that spread across the Middle east in 2011. Beginning in Tunisia, followed by Egypt, Lybia, Yemen and Syria, revolts began attempting to overthrow dictatorial governments, some of which had been in rule for decades. As the spring ended, the revolution in many of these countries did not. Governments continued to suppress protestors using force and violence, acts which have been condemend by the world audience.
